The Construction & Built Environment Challenge 2017 EACH YEAR since 1999, a team made up of local college and university staff and training providers devise and run a series of construction, engineering and building services challenges for teams of S2 pupils (age 13-14). The aim is to highlight the varied and exciting careers in the sector to pupils at this vital stage in their education. Schools in Edinburgh & the Lothians are invited to put forward a team of 10 S2 pupils to compete in the competition. The competition enables 300 pupils and 30 teachers to gain valuable experience and insight to the construction, engineering and building services sectors. The event is facilitated and organised by the Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT), West Lothian College, Edinburgh College, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh Napier University and SRUC (Oatridge Campus). Visiting the institutions at their own campus gives pupils the opportunity to explore new learning environments, talk to staff and experts in the field as well as take part in a range of construction, engineering and building services challenges. The Grand Final this year was held on the 12 January at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange in Edinburgh and prizes were awarded by Jamie Hepburn MSP, Minister for Employability and Training The winning school was Balerno High School, with Linlithgow Academy in second place and Deans Community High School in third place. Congratulations to all the pupils who took part. • www.snipef.org Membership Officer Andy Furneval gives us an update on what he’s been up to Since my last update in the Autumn edition of Plumb Heat I have 19 ….had an outstanding January 2017 bringing in 11 new membership applications which is a 120% increase compared with January last year.
